  Title:  (ALTERNATE TITLE)

Description:  This chart sounds much more difficult than it is. A blues variation in 13/4 over a hard rock ostinato, the V chord area shifts to 12/8 (dotted quarter remains constant). Sections are scored as units, for the most part. Solo changes appear in bari, guitar and piano parts, but could go anywhere. Scored solo space for electric bass, as well as two collective improvisations. The tune is kicked off by a Tenor 1 cadenza (could be guitar, or anyone) leading to the ostinato. Lead Trumpet to written E, Trombone 1 to A. Originally written to feature the quartet, Equilateral, with college-level big bands, the inspiration for this tune came from two songs from Led Zeppelin IIMoby Dick and Heartbreaker. Its shreddin time! SoloistTenor 1; Bari Sax, Guitar, Piano (or anyone); Electric Bass. Doublesnone.Brass5 trumpets, 4 trombones.

  Title:  AND SO BUT ANYWAY

Description:  This happy hip-hop shuffle features lots of linear writing for every player in the band, including the rhythm section. In addition to the main solo section over the form, the ensemble development section features exchanges between the horn sections and electric bass, and climaxes in a tenor/drums slugfest ala Wayne Shorter and Steve Gadd on the Steely Dan tune, Aja. The shadow of Donald Fagen looms large over this piece! Lead Trumpet to written C, Trombone 1 to B flat. Originally scored to feature the quartet, Equilateral, with college-level big bands, the title is borrowed from the author David Foster Wallaces magnum opus, Infinite Jest. SoloistAlto 2 (briefly), Electric Bass, Tenor 1/drums. Changes over the main solo section appear in Alto 1, Trumpet 5, and Trombone 1 as well as piano, vibes and guitar. Doublesnone.Brass5 trumpets, 4 trombones.

  Title:  HOWLING FANTODS

Description:  Commissioned for the Waukee (Iowa) High School Jazz Ensemble I, this piece is written on Monk's Epistrophy changes. The groove is a modified baion feel with occasional swing. Piano and Vibes (optional) carry the melody at the start, although Rhodes piano is really the optimal color. The solo section is written for piano, but could be opened up for anyone in the band. An exciting development section leads to a rhythm section breakdown section upon which is built 3 layers of counterpoint. A short piano solo interjection leads us back to a partial recap of the tune with a brief coda section. Modest brass ranges (lead trumpet touches D once; lead trombone to A).Soloist - piano (or anyone). No doubles..5,4,4,G,P,B,D, Optl. vibes.

  Title:  INCIDENT @ PERKINS

Description:  Incident @ Perkins depicts, in the hard bop style, what can happen if you forget to ask for a plastic fork to go with your to go order of pie: sweet, sweet petty theft! This chart is full of parallel fifths, so theory police, get out your red pencils. Seriously, this chart is a big band romp in the hard bop tradition. Inspired by real-life events, the tune is somewhat Brecker-ish in nature. The piece climaxes in a tug-of-war between the ensemble and the drummer. Who will win? It doesn't matter, because everyone gets pie. This MOAJE commission was funded by Martha Stitzel in memory of her father Matt Betton, co-founder of the National Association of Jazz Educators, and her mother Betty Betton, Administrative Assistant. Soloist: scored for Alto 1,tenor 1,trumpet 2,trombone 1, or rhythm. Also space for the drummer. Tpt. to written D. 5/5/4/G/Vibes/P/B/D.

  Title:  KOOBISM

Description:  Commissioned for UNI president Bob Koop's farewell celebration. Koobism is a straight ahead swinger in the hard bop style. The A section of the 32-bar theme is based on Coltrane's Resolution, and the bridge features major harmonies rising by major thirds, ala Giant Steps. Introductory and interlude material brings to mind Chick Corea's Three Quartets album. Lots of contrapuntal writing, as well as an interesting saxophone soli and a traditional ensemble tuttu at the end. Medium Difficult. Soloists - alto, piano, drums (could be opened up for any instrument). No doubles.

  Title:  NEARLY BLUE

The arrangement features several interesting settings of the main theme, and linear writing for every player in the band. The main solo section has changes for Tenor 1, Trumpet 5, Trombone 1, and Piano, but could be opened up for anyone. Solo backgrounds may evoke the spirit of Ray Charles! Two choruses of ensemble development lead to an open drum solo over a vamp. The introduction can be opened up for Electric Bass. Lead Trumpet to written C, Trombone 1 to B flat. The original version (under a different title) appears the cd, And Another Thing, by the pianoless quartet Equilateral. This arrangement, originally scored to feature Equilateral with big bands, appears on UNIs Jazz Band Ones cd, This Is The Band.SoloistAlto 2 (briefly), Electric Bass, Tenor 1/drums.   Title:  PAGAN PIE

Description:  Is it an unholy dessert? Maybe, but the title actually refers to the short-lived outfield combination of Angel Pagan and Felix Pie, active with the Chicago Cubs for a brief time. This straight ahead swinger was commissioned by Michael Prichard for the Bishop Heelan High School jazz band, Sioux City, Iowa. A happy sounding piece, this tune is mostly in either C or A flat major, making the improvisation accessible to developing players. Harmonic variety is achieved through clever use of diatonic passing chords and moving basslines, including an obvious tip of the hat to the Jackson Five. The saxophones get a lot of love in this one, including melodic material, a chorus-long soli, and some unison interjections in the shout chorus. Brass ranges are comfortable for high school or college musicians (lead trumpet to D, trombone 1 to A). Bass lines are written out, with chord symbols included. Piano part includes sample voicings throughout.soloists—changes appear in alto 1, trumpet 2, trombone

  Title:  QUIET NOW

Description:  Not quite a ballad, not really a jazz waltz, this haunting piece features soprano saxophone throughout. The modal harmonies are of long duration, challenging the melodic invention of your soloist as well as your rhythm section’s ability to create and sustain a mood. Very reasonable brass ranges—lead trumpet to D flat, trombone I to A.Soloist - soprano sax. Doubles Alto 1 on soprano throughout: Bari doubles bass clarinet (optional); all trumpets double flugelhorn.5,4,4,P,B.D.

  Title:  THANK YOU VERY PLEASE

Description:  This uplifting piece was written to honor one of the greatest jazz drummers of South Africa, Lulu Gontsana. Even eighths. The introduction is built on major seventh chords over a driving beat, which opens up at the start of the theme. It spaces out even further in the bridge before returning to the intro material, this time with a saxophone melody attached. Solo backgrounds are all derived from the thematic material, adding to the tightness of structure. Slight formal deviations occur in the solo sections, guaranteed to keep the soloist and listeners on their toes. Ensemble development follows, ending in a partial recap of the theme (reorchestrated). Finally, the introduction returns, this time stacking up 4 layers of counterpoint! A rousing finish to an energetic chart. Soloists - trombone 1, trumpet 4. No doubles. 5,4,4,G,P,B,D. Lead Trpt. to high F. Lead Trbn. to Bb.
