  Title:  AFTER YOU'VE GONE

Description:  I have arranged this chart in a Latin groove instead of the traditional swing style. Even though it is Latin it still swings hard and the chord changes are great for soloing. It features the trumpet and sax but can feature anyone else in the group. It has a challenging stop-time tutti section with a drum solo. This is a great chart and will challenge everyone in the band, and the audience will love it. Instrumentation: 2trpts, 1trbn, 1alto, 1tenor, 1 bari, guitar, piano (electric or fender), electric bass, and drums.Lead trumpet is a written C - two octaves above middle C.

  Title:  ANVIL CHORUS

Description:  Anvil Chorus is a straight-ahead hard swingin' chart (quarter note=240) rescored for mini-big band. Anvil Chorus was originally written by Giuseppe Verdi in 1853 as part of his opera La Traviata. During WWII arranger Jerry Grey penned it for Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps Band as a featue for drummer Ray McKinley. Anvil Chorus has everything you want in a chart: excitement, a fast-grooving tempo, lots of solos including the drums, a soli and tutti section, and a feel that makes you want to get up and dance. This chart is an excellent opener or closer. I have played this chart for over 25 years and it is one of those charts that is a crowd pleaser wherever and whenever you play it. Soloists: Trumpet, piano, tenor sax, and drums (and optional solos from the band if desired by the director). Instrumentations: Two trumpets, one trombone, one alto, one tenor, one baritone sax, Rhythm section: piano, string bass, guitar, and drums. No doubles.

  Title:  BASICALLY LONG JOHN

Description:  Basically Long John is an exciting medium swing guitar feature based on G blues. What did you expect, E blues? Dave wrote this chart spcifically for his good friend, John Sterling, a great all round guitarist with whom he has worked with for over 2 years. This is a very exciting chart for the band and the audience. You must have a guitarist who is willing to put it on the line. Specifically, they must be able to read the written lines and play chord changes. This is a chance for them to step up to the plate and make it happen! The introduction begins with the traditional guitar solo and rhythm section over an open 12-bar blues vamp (swing jazz blues). The soloist should not go over the top right away, but must still be exciting, since the main solo will happen later on in the chart. The melody is played next by the guitar in a "Herb Ellis" style, followed by stopped-time horn section under the guitar solo. This is followed by a challenging tutti section. After that, it is time f

  Title:  BEE'S BOPPIN'

Description:  Bee's Boppin' is an exciting and challenging up tempo (240+=BPM) big band chart based on rhythm changes. Dave originally wrote and dedicated this chart to his lovely wife, Denise, a trombonist who has been working on rhythm changes. This chart challenges the entire saxophone section with solos, two separate soliÕs, and a tutti section. Solos featured are piano, drums, and two tenors, and there is space to feature additional soloists if desired. The chart begins with a piano solo followed by a traditional Kansas City riff melody in the saxophones, with backgrounds, melodies, and fills in the brass. Immediately following the head there is a very challenging saxophone soli followed by solos with the tenors and piano. After the solos there is a stop-time sax soli with the string bass and piano leading into the shout chorus then back to the head and out. This chart, while being very challenging for the band, has been proven to be a real crowd pleaser is a definite opener or closer f

Title:  BLUES IN HOSS' FLAT (BLUES IN FRANKIE'S FLAT)

Description:  This is a medium shuffle blues (quarter note=132) in D flat, originally scored by Frank Foster for the Basie Orchestra. It has now been reduced for a little big band--(2tpt, 1 t-bone, 3 saxes, and rhythm, p-b-d-g-). There are a few things that must be pointed out. The lead tpt lines and most of the other lead lines are still in tact. There are some trombone and sax section parts that are rescored in the piano and guitar parts. All Mr. Foster's expression, dynamic marks, etc. are all the same. Don't get scared by a few of these changes because this chart still swings like crazy and is a definite crowd-pleaser even in this new format. Trumpet highest note Eflat5. Featured soloists--trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, and piano. Instrumentation: two trumpets, one trombone, one alto, on e tenor, one baritone,. Rhythm: piano, bass, drums, and guitaar. No doubles. Medium difficult.

  Title:  BLUES IN OVERDRIVE, THE

Description:  The Blues in Overdrive is just what it says and means, the blues played at a very challenging tempo, 270+= BPM, in a hard-bop style. Every section of the band is challenged both with written parts and solos over the blues at a very fast tempo. Featured solos are drums, trumpet, alto, and tenor, all who play a great Kansas City riff style on the head. Then it is open for solos. When the rhythm section keeps the tempo on the burning edge, it is very rewarding for all the musicians and the audience. It is a great chart and can be used and an opener of closer. Instrumentation: 2trpts, 1trbn, 1alto, 1tenor, 1 bari, guitar, acoustic piano, string bass, and drums.Lead trumpet is a written Aa major 13th above middle C - or an octave and Major 6th.

  Title:  CRACKIN'

Description:  Crackin is an exciting and challenging medium-tempo shuffle (132+=BPM) for big band, based on the jazz blues progression, in B-flat, featuring the jazz organ (a synthesizer that has an organ sound/patch will work), tenor sax, and electric bass. This chart challenges the entire saxophone and brass section with soli, and tutti sections. Featured solos are organ, tenor, and the electric bass. The concept of this chart is based on the raw sound of the jazz blues shuffle with the screaming Leslie speakers that are usually hooked up to the Hammond B-3 organ. If your group does not have an organ or synthesizer there is the option of having the electric guitar used instead. I have done both and it works well either way. The organ starts with a screaming organ solo in a hard-hitting shuffle groove with backgrounds and fills from the brass and the woodwinds. Immediately following the organ solo a very challenging saxophone soli enters in stop time, followed by the brass doing the same thing

Title:  FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE CADILLAC CLUB

Description:  This is is a medium up-tempo (190=BPM) New York four-on-the- floor shuffle. First recorded in 1987 by Bob Berg and his combo, it has become a contemporary standard played all over the world and recorded by many jazz greats. It is a 12-bar blues that was expanded to a 24-bar blues progression with lots of chord substitutions. I have arranged this chart to feature the tenor sax. The melody is very challenging and it has a great sax soli. Also, there is a solo for the piano. It would be in the best interest of the chart to use some type of electronic keyboard or maybe even organ. Electric bass should be used instead of the string bass and it would be great to have an electric guitarist. Solos can be expanded to other players if so desired.Instrumentation: 2trpts, 1trbn, 1alto, 1tenor, 1 bari, guitar, piano (electric or fender), electric bass, and drums.Lead trumpet is a written A flat a minor 13th above middle C - or an octave and minor 6th.

Title:  GIVE IT TO THE BASS PLAYER

Description:  This is a fun chart in a Hard-Bop blues groove in the key of F. The tempo should be around 130 BPM for the quarter note but could go faster. As the title suggests it is a string or electric bass feature. The chord changes are traditional jazz blues. This chart has been performed many times and has been proven to be a definite crowd pleaser. There is really fun and great sax soli and a fun tutti section. It can be used on any professional or college jazz concert. Besides the featured bass solo anyone in the band can solo depending on what the director wants to do. Soloist: Flugelhorn. Trumpet highest note C5 (Two octaves above middle C) Instrumentation: Four trumpets, four trombones, (the fourth being a bass trombone) two altos, two tenors, one baritone sax, Rhythm: piano, bass, and drums (guitar optional). No doubles. Medium.
