  Title:  #358 BUS

Description:  This is a light-hearted, hard-swinging tribute to a couple of my favorite tunes. The A section fits a new, original, chromatic melody on to "A Train" changes. The bridge introduces a contrasting riff-based motive over the first five chords of "Giant Steps" (only one chord per bar,though...don't wanna get too nuts). It flies! IIt is not beyond a good high school band, however. After one melody chorus, there is open space for solos (changes are in all parts). The final solo (trumpet) comes with 2 choruses of backgrounds. Lots of inventive and fun quoting here is meant to suggest a great head arrangement. The trumpet solo leads into 4-bar trades with the drums. After an organic shout chorus it heads home. This tune is not that hard, uses no doublings, and has reasonable brass ranges (lead trumpet has a couple of brief "D's", well-prepared). It would be a great festival chart (every section gets a workout and flexible solos) or concert closer. Lead trumpet Eb. Optional vibes and guitar. Me

  Title:  CALLE CALIENTE

Description:  This was originally planned as a jazz fingering etude for solo alto sax. It just grew and grew....Sounding a bit like a monor-key "Donna Lee", this chart takes structural inspiration from a favorite version ofn "Green Dolphin". The difference in my arrangement is that the swing and latin grooves do not alternate in a predictable pattern. The first 8 is delivered by acapella lead alto (accompanied only by stop-time drum accents) and the groove stays in samba time throughout 31/2 choruses before breaking into swing time. From that point on, the swing gradually gains preeminence over the latin feel before winning out completely. The first melody chorus builds in complexity to launch the lead alto into a solo (accompanied only by rhythm section for the first chorus). The alto gets another solo chorus with samba-type backgrounds building up throughout. Thebeginning of the fourth chorus sounds like a tutti-unison recap of the melody but it is really a half-chorus oftraded fours between the b

  Title:  DI-LITHIUM BLUES

Description:  This chart is a fierce, mid-tempo, funk steamroller. It never varies from the basic groove of from the 12-bar blues structure. However, a simple harmonic device (sliding up and down a semitone on each chord) imparts a slightly Middle Eastern flavor. Only "sus 4" chords are used which enhances the modal quality. The drummer sets the groove for the opening chorus: chords only. Next the quirky 16th note melody is stated by tenor and trombone. This melody is then restated a couple octaves higher by saxes, trumpet and vibe. After this, there is an open solo section which is provided with three different backgrounds that can be played in any order. One of these backgrounds introduces a snaky counter melody which echoes the semitone motion in the chords and becomes more important later. The tenorsolo follows the open section. Accompanied at first by only rhythm, the soloist is joined by trills from low saxes and bones and then by some funky brass backgrounds interspersed with the countermelod

  Title:  GUAJIRAKERE

Description:  This simple Jaujira stays largely within the traditional I-IV-V harmonic framework associated with this Cuban dance form. The unique character of this chart is created by attractive melodies, subtle orchestrational shadings and ever-changing interludes. Two cup-muted trombones introduce an arpeggiatd figure accompanied only by a guiro. Then, along with the drumset, the real bass line begins (played on tuba or bass). Over this gentle-but steady motor, a cup-muted trumpet sings a simple tune. Eight bars later, flutes and saxes join forces for a short bridge. The melody of the second chorus is stated by flute and muted trumpet in octaves with a fuller underpinning. This builds to another bridge which leads into the flugelhorn solo. The soloist plays 8 bars with the rhythm section before saxes and brass are layered into the mix. This time, the bridge is slighly extended (by way of a brief chorale for saxes and low brass). and modulates one whole-step down to set up a full-throated melody ch

  Title:  PIKE STREET SHUFFLE

Description:  This Bb shuffle/swing/blues is a tribute to the late, great Ernie Wilkins. It makes a nice opener and you can add some rhythn choruses up front if desired. Saxes jump right out of the starting gate with a basic blues riff over a medium-fast shuffle groove. Brasses first comment on the sax idea before they take over the lead. The second chorus is a slightly fuller orchestration of the first which leads into a tenor solo. The solo section can be opened up as needed: it is 12-bar blues (with a couple of ear-catching substitutions) but the rhythm section switches from shuffle to a straight-ahead swing feel. There are two more solo choruses with back grounds that fragment and pass around the opening riff building to another restatement of the theme. This time the entire brass section shouts the melody while the saxes take a supporting role. At the end of this melody chorus there is a half-step modulation (Bb-B) leading into a phat, boppish, 2-chorus sax soli. The modulation is only a teaser
