  Title:  BUSTER

Description:  Buster(named for my West Highland Terrier) is an up tempo, swing tune that features solos by guitar or piano, tenor sax and trombone. The harmonies and length of choruses keeps the soloists on their toes. Each soloist has 3 choruses with a background on their second chorus. The changes are challenging but fun. I would give it a medium difficulty level.5/4/4/G/P/B/D.

  Title:  BUSTER'S LAST STAND

Description:  In the mid 1930s, Gil Evans was leading a Benny Goodman-styled big band on the west coast. Surviving airchecks of this ensemble show it to be an impressive unit that certainly had the potential to become quite successful. However, vocalist Skinnay Ennis of the Hal Kemp Orchestra was going out on his own, and Evanss agency decided that Ennis should take Evanss orchestra. Along with Ennis came pianist/arranger Claude Thornhill, and the two arrangers became fast friends. When Thornhill formed his own orchestra, Evans came with him, although he continued to write for the Ennis ensemble. Busters Last Stand is one of the few fast swing pieces that the Thornhill band played. They recorded it for Columbia Records in 1942 shortly before a ban on recording was imposed by the music union, and it remained in the book when the Thornhill ensemble was re-formed in 1946. This edition of Busters Last Stand comes from photocopies of the original parts except for the reeds, which were recopied years

  Title:  CANNONBALL ADDERLY MEMORIAL BARBEQUE

Description:  A moving and respectful tribute to Cannonball. This alto sax and bass feature reminisces on the ballad and medium swing aspects of Cannonballs playing. The piece begins with a free modal bass solo, the alto joins in, and time commences into a beautiful ballad. A laid-back double time section follows after which the alto has a chance to stretch out. The ensuing sections are based on my conception of some of Cannonballs more quirky stylistic mannerisms. Trpt.1 to written high Eb. Medium difficult.

  Title:  CAPTAIN JON

Description:  Captain Jon is the sixth movement of the Southeast Alaska Suite by Geoffrey Keezer. This tune features the drummer in a rollicking Latin style with plenty of open-ended solo time. In the words of the composer Captain Jon (Jon Wikan), was our fearless Captain, who also happens to be an excellent drummer. This was the only movement of the Suite that was actually composed on the boat, at least the first eight bars of the melody. I had brought a small, portable keyboard on board with the noble intent of practicing - but for the most part there was too much to see, fish to catch, anchors to pull up... At one point on our journey the boat had engine trouble and Captain Jon crawled down in the engine roon, switched some fuel lines around, rewired some things, and got us back underway in no time, all the while reassuring us that it was no big deal. I found out much later just how dangerous our situation actually was. We were only a mile from shore and, had we not been able to start our engine,

  Title:  CARELESS LOVE

Description:  Inspired by the laid-back 2004 recording by Madeline Peyroux, this early 20th century classic is a simple 16 bar head originally penned by W. C. Handy. The arrangement works well as a concert piece for unaccompanied trombone quintet or with optional bass and drums for a jazzier setting. It is through composed (no open blowing space or improvisation) and the melody lays well in the keys of F, Bb and Db. Lead to High C. Love may be careless but this chart is hardly that as it travels through solo, duo, trio, quartet and full blown quintet orchestrations. It is also well suited for doubling parts for a ten trombone ensemble with or without bass and drums.
